A Wednesday Word from the Director | Balancing The Busy

Hi Friends,

January came in like a lion and brought with it an entire year of drama, foolishness, and mayhem. The month ended on a bitter note; quite literally with a polar vortex that shut down cities across the Midwest and East Coast including Rochester. For me, January always feels super long and super busy and this year was no exception. Between closing out the year behind, gearing up for the weeks and months ahead and trying to tie up loose ends, finding time for balance can be a challenge during the month of January.

Adding to this I was also busy managing:
  • a growing speaking and facilitation schedule,
  • managing all the growth of 540, Inc
  • planning the launch of 540 at the Yards
  • blogging, writing, reading, and researching;
  • managing fibromyalgia
  • and more

At time all this feel like juggling 50/11 full time commitments with little time to decompress between everything that is going on. With all this being shared, I wouldn’t trade my life for another and even though some days are more challenging (and longer) than others; overall I am happy and blessed in more ways than I can share. Creating balance within the busy is something that I am constantly working on and just when I think I have it all figured out; my human imperfection keeps me in check. Fortunately, 540 has been blessed to see growth to now three part-time staff members, three volunteers, and a new high school intern to help me help myself find balance and realize that I do not have to do it all alone.

I hope you are finding and keeping yourself balanced amongst the mayhem and madness of the world and the business of daily living. Sometimes it feels like it’s all too much and those are the perfect times to stop, breath in and reach out for help.

Campaigns + Content

We launched a number of important digital education campaigns in January + February. These included:

  1. Fit, Well, & Sustainable at 540
  2. #speakout now A Campaign Against Injustice
  3. 2nd Annual Digital Black History Month Education Campaign

I hope that you are keeping up to date with all the content and taking the in person classes that connect to the themes shared on social media.

540 at The Yards

I spent many hours planning and preparing for February 3rd’s 540 at the Yards Launch Party. As much as I enjoy event planning I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that the shear number of hours that it takes to put on even a small scale event like a community party are at times exhausting. However in the end when everything goes off without a hitch as it did this past Sunday; it reinforces that every detail matters and that the cliched saying ” The proof is in the pudding” is true every single time.

The proof is in the pudding

I was floored by the level of attendance on a Sunday evening especially on a Super Bowl Sunday. Old and new friends connected with The Yards space. We had raffle prizes (which I will announce soon), food, music, and not one, but two dynamic performances by Anderson Allen. I honestly couldn’t have planned for a better turnout and I am thankful and grateful for my team for their amazing work and all the small business sponsors that donated gifts and swag to the gift bags

Fast Facts About the Launch Party

  • Over 70 community members attended
  • $165 was raised through donations and raffle tickets
  • 9 small business’es donated gift to the raffle gift bags including:
  • Scratch Bakeshop, The Red Fern, Arena’s Inc., UUU Collective, Ray Ray Mitrano, Adam Eaton, New City Cafe, Get Caked Bakery, Ray Ray Mitrano

  1. Congratulations Calvin, I have great respect and admiration for you. I have only made it to one event at 540 and as the weather warms a bit will find my way there more often. Hope to meet and chat with you in near future. MacClurg Vivian
