About Austin

(he/his/him) In addition to volunteering with 540WMain; Austin Retlaff is a graphic designer, writer, video editor and multi-disciplinary artist living and working in upstate New York. Throughout his art practice he explores storytelling, communication, novel approaches to media and technique, and being original within a marketable context. Austin is passionate about storytelling to create unity, impactful moments, and clarity around meaningful subjects.

Austin’s Interview

Why did you decide to volunteer/work at 540WMain Communiversity?

AR: Seeing the incredible work that the organization is part of

Where did you grow up? 

AR: I grew up in Brighton
When you’re not volunteering/working at 540WMain what do you like to do? 
AR: I like to listen to music, relax, watch videos, try new foods, and cook once in a while. 
How do you stay healthy? 
AR: I follow a vegan and gluten-free diet which is relatively plant-based.
 
What your favorite healthy food to eat? 
AR: I love fresh fruits and vegetables, mushrooms, peas, and beets.
How do you express creativity in your life? 
AR: I express my creativity through art, conversation and humor. 
 
What is it that inspires you to work with 540WMain? 
AR: The undefined possibilities
What are you working on now? 
AR: I am applying for jobs in graphic design, hopefully some writing / and art installations soon. 
What do you like best about living in Rochester? 
AR: I appreciate the low cost of living,  and unpretentious but still artistic and forward-thinking community among other things. 
What do you like least about living in Rochester. 
AR: Definitely the cold winters are a challenge. We can be too disconnected and not enough big city type of experiences

AR: I look forward to whatever we can do together!
